George has been with the centre for over 15 years. His research interests include wetland ecology, irrigation and natural resource management. He is currently President of the Society of Wetland Scientists (Australasia) and serves on several expert and advisory committees.

Following undergraduate study at University of Adelaide (on phosphorus dynamics in macrophytes), he moved to James Cook University in north Queensland to undertake higher degree research on the limnology and classification of wetlands in the lower Burdekin region. Subsequently, his other research and managerial interests have led him into projects on the role of artificial wetlands in irrigation schemes, the propagation of aquatic plants and weeds, and the development of environmental flow methods for instream and riparian communities. His consulting experience is varied and includes reviews, conducting environmental impact studies, botanical surveys and providing aquatic plant management advice. George has also undertaken several research consultancies on best practice for the development of new irrigation schemes and is currently leading an integrated assessment of Australia's tropical rivers for the Australian Government. .
