Aaron has a BSc and MAppSc from JCU. He majored in zoology and ecology for his degree and his Masters degree included research on the macroinvertebrates of the upper Burdekin River. At ACTFR he has worked as an aquatic ecologist across a broad range of issues in north Queensland on stream and wetland management.

He is currently enrolled in a M.Sc. studying the dietary ecology of the terapontid fish family, known commonly as the ‘grunters’. His master’s has a broad focus on terapontid eco-morphology, primarily the relationships between fish form and diet. Areas of specific interest include the evolution of different dietary habits at the generic-family level, particularly the development of herbivorous feeding strategies in several of the more evolved genera in the family, and the development of morphological characters that facilitate this dietary diversity.

Another similar study topic is investigation of the substantial dietary transitions evident throughout the life history (ontogeny) of many terapontid species, and the morphological characters that may facilitate these shifts. He is currently analysing terapontid specimens collected through a range of projects across northern Australia, spanning catchments from the east coast of Queensland, through the Northern Territory and into the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
